OTTAWA – Independent broadcaster Torres Media today announced it is taking its station Rebel 101.7 (CIDG-FM) in a new direction, rebranding it as Rebel Rock 101.7 – Ottawa’s Best Rock.

“The programming adjustment involves a broadening of the music playlist, to build on the success of Rebel. The station first adopted a Rock format 6 years ago,” a press release says.

“The Rebel Rock mix is made up of the best of the best starting with Rock’s first generation of legends like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath.”

The station’s mix also includes rock music from the 70’s (Neil Young, David Bowie, Aerosmith), 80’s (The Police, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses), 90’s (The Tragically Hip, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins) and the 2000’s (The Arkells, Black Keys, Queens of the Stone Age).

“Rebel Rock 101.7 is the only station in Ottawa that carefully curates a mix of the best new rock and the best from rock’s magnificent library of masters. The station has supported Local Ottawa artists since its inception and will continue to make sure they receive airplay as well,” the press release says.

“Unlike Pop music, Top 40 and even Country, where the artists come and go regularly and musical styles are ever changing, the Rock format is the only genre that has stood the popularity test of time for its fans! Chances are, regardless of age, if you like Led Zeppelin from 1969, you also love Metallica from the 2000’s!”

As part of the station’s new direction, they are also “making improvements to the audio chain… by investing in world class audio processing equipment, bringing a cleaner and louder sound to the audience,” explains the release.

Jamie Watson will be the voice of Rebel Rock 101.7. “Our on-air line up remains the same with (Darryl) “Kornicky in the Morning”, Cub Carson in the afternoon and Alexa in the evenings. Look for exciting additions to our talent line up in the near future,” the release says.

The decision to change up the station was made to add to its audience by providing a broader musical offering.

“Our goal now is to also attract new listeners to the Rebel family, those rock listeners in Ottawa who may not have listened to the station in the past or have not even heard of it,” says the release. “With a recently improved signal boost in the Ottawa Central market area, we are in a better position to grow as our world is coming out from the pandemic. In turn, more audience for Rebel will better serve our local retailers.”
