Telus said Thursday it is participating in a U.S. Department of Commerce initiative to support the development and deployment of trustworthy and safe artificial intelligence.

The U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium, announced in February, will “unite AI creators and users, academics, government and industry researchers, and civil society organizations in support of the development and deployment of safe and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI),” a Commerce Department press release said.

Telus will be joining more than 280 artificial intelligence stakeholders in the initiative.

“At TELUS, we are determined to harness the power of technology to create a better future,” Pamela Snively, Telus’s chief data and trust officer, said in a Thursday press release. “Our involvement in the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium underscores our commitment to responsible AI, ensuring that AI is developed and deployed in a trustworthy, ethical manner that is safe and benefits everyone.

“We look forward to collaborating with other industry leaders, academics, and organizations to advance the standards and practices that will shape the future of AI responsibly,” Snively added.

Telus has been incorporating AI into its systems for some time now. In July, it announced the launch of Fuel EX, which it what it calls “an enterprise-safe generative AI (GenAI) employee assistant to support productivity, creativity and research.”

“TELUS won an international Outstanding Organization 2023 prize from the Responsible AI Institute in recognition of its commitment to fostering trust and benefitting society,” Telus’s Thursday press release continued, adding it signed the Government of Canada’s voluntary code of conduct for generative AI, “which aims to ensure the transparent, equitable and responsible development and deployment of GenAI technology.”
