SEATTLE — Telus was the fastest mobile operator among Canada’s national providers in Q3 2022, and Rogers was the fastest fixed broadband service provider in the country during the same quarter, according to the latest report from Seattle-based broadband and mobile network testing company Ookla.

The report, released today, says Telus achieved a median mobile download speed of 76.03 Mbps (please see the chart above) during Q3 2022. The median download speeds for Canada’s other two national mobile providers, Bell and Rogers, were 73.3 Mbps and 59.86 Mbps respectively, according to the report.

Rogers achieved the fastest median upload speed for mobile in Q3 at 9.19 Mbps, compared to 7.56 Mbps for Telus and 7 Mbps for Bell.

Ookla also measured the consistency of each national mobile operator’s performance and found Rogers had the highest consistency during Q3 2022, “with 79.9% of results showing at least a 5 Mbps minimum download speed and 1 Mbps minimum upload speed,” the report reads.

In comparison, Ookla gave Telus and Bell consistency scores of 78.5% and 77.8%, respectively.

Looking at 5G performance only, Bell had the fastest median download speed during Q3 2022 at 144.73 Mbps, compared to Telus’ median download speed of 136.29 Mbps and Rogers’ 97.55 Mbps.

Fixed broadband

Rogers surpassed Shaw Communications to become the fastest fixed broadband provider in Canada in Q3 2022, achieving a median download speed of 223.89 Mbps, according to Ookla’s report.

Shaw’s median fixed broadband download speed was 206.05 Mbps, followed by Bell at 157.05 Mbps, Telus at 133.98 Mbps, Cogeco at 120.02 Mbps and Videotron at 104.32 Mbps. (Please see the chart below.)

Bell had the fastest fixed broadband median upload speed in Q3 2022 at 120.76 Mbps. Telus had the second-fastest median upload speed at 112.37 Mbps, followed by Shaw (61.26 Mbps), Videotron (32.79 Mbps), Cogeco (23.7 Mbps) and Rogers (21.75 Mbps).

Rogers had the highest consistency score among top fixed broadband providers in Canada during Q3 2022, “with 89.7% of results showing at least a 25 Mbps minimum download speed and 3 Mbps minimum upload speed,” says Ookla’s report.

Shaw’s consistency score for fixed broadband was 87.3%, followed by Cogeco at 86.1%, Videotron at 85.4%, Telus at 85.3% and Bell at 83.8%.
