Telefilm Canada announced last week an investment of $4.9 million in 21 feature-length documentaries under its Theatrical Documentary Program.
The documentaries selected for funding include six titles from the French market and 15 titles from the English market.
Eight of the documentaries are from Quebec-based production companies, while nine are from Ontario, three are from British Columbia, and one is from Newfoundland and Labrador.
The production companies receiving funding include: Metafilms Inc.; Item 7 Inc.; Fauve Film Inc.; EyeSteelFilm Inc.; 9097-4767 Quebec Inc. (Les Films Camera Oscura); Les Films La Tribu Inc.; Corporation ACPAV Inc.; 9337-7190 Quebec Inc. (Laurus Productions Inc.); LJH Films Inc.; Understory Films Inc.; Grand Scheme Productions Inc.; Studio BRB Productions Inc.; Anti-Diva Inc.; 86 Media House Inc.; HitPlay Productions Inc.; Dylan Reibling Productions Inc.; 1000543880 Ontario Inc.; Mercury Films Inc. and Carousel Pictures Inc.; Muse Entertainment (Ontario) Inc. and 2429014 Ontario Inc. (Parrhesia Media); OP8 Productions Inc. and Big Cedar Films Inc.; and Soft Studio Productions Inc., Arbitrage Pictures Inc. and Isserley Films Inc.
Telefilm said in a press release it received an increasingly high volume of applications under the Theatrical Documentary Program this year. In total, 122 projects were assessed in both the English and French markets, representing more than $27.1 million in funding requests, according to Telefilm.
“With changes to the program guidelines expanding eligibility, Telefilm received an increase of 31.5% in applications from the English market compared to the previous fiscal year,” Telefilm’s release said.
It said more funding decisions, including projects from the second intake of the big budget stream in the English market, will be announced soon.
