TORONTO — In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day, SiriusXM Canada announced mid-morning Monday it is featuring specialty programming today on its newest station The Indigiverse as well as on its Canada Talks channel.
Available on channel 165, The Indigiverse will be hosting its first takeover today, with 2021 Juno award winner Leela Gilday and Julian Taylor co-hosting to celebrate great Indigenous music from across Turtle Island, taking listeners through lyrical discussions and reflections on how music heals, while also discussing the recent discovery of the remains of 215 children buried at a former Kamloops residential school. Gilday and Taylor’s program airs today at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. ET, with re-broadcasts throughout the week.
In addition, Kim Wheeler, who is Mohawk and Anishinaabe, will present a special edition of The Kim Wheeler Show today on The Indigiverse at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. ET. The special episode will feature interviews with Anishinaabe actor Craig Lauzon, award-winning Métis singer-songwriter Amanda Rheaume and Raven Kanatakta, a Mohawk/Anishinaabe father and one part of the multi-award-winning music duo Digging Roots.
The Indigiverse channel features music from Indigenous artists such as William Prince, A Tribe Called Red, RIIT and Snotty Nose Rez Kids. Listeners can tune in to the channel in their vehicle, online or on the SiriusXM App.
In addition to programming on The Indigiverse, SiriusXM’s Canada Talks (channel 167) will feature a variety of special programming today to amplify Indigenous voices, including:
- Good Mornings with Dahlia Kurtz, 7 a.m. ET — Kurtz will be joined by Brian Porter of Six Nations of the Grand River.
- The Arlene Bynon Show, 8 a.m. ET — Bynon hosts NDP MPP Sol Mamakwa (Kingfisher First Nation).
- The Daily Edition with Matt Gurney, 10 a.m. ET — Gurney welcomes Chief Mike Sack of Sipekne’katik First Nation.
- Krystal Nation with Andrew Krystal, 12:40 p.m. ET — Stephanie Jonah of the Cree Nation in Northern Quebec joins Krystal.
- Canada Now with Jeff Sammut, 1 p.m. ET — Sammut hosts Canadian Cree writer, poet and lawyer Michelle Good, whose book Five Little Indians won this year’s Governor General’s Literary Awards in the fiction category.
- The Breakdown with Allison Dore, 3 p.m. ET — Dore hosts award-winning Anishinaabe producer and actor Jennifer Podemski.
- Sports Talk Today, 6 p.m. ET — Ted Nolan, Ojibwe former professional hockey player and head coach, joins Ryan Paton on Sports Talk.
- The Bilal Vakani Hour, 8 p.m. ET — Italian/Métis WWE legend Santino Marella joins Vakani on Tuesday, June 22.
