REGINA — SaskTel announced today the expansion of its 5G network to the Saskatchewan communities of Crooked River, Cut Knife, Quill Lake and the rural area northeast of Hanley.

Until now, SaskTel’s 5G deployment has focused on bringing service to the province’s largest centres – it is already available in Regina, Saskatoon and Craven and earlier this month, SaskTel announced it was rolling out its 5G network in the City of Moose Jaw.

With today’s announcement, “SaskTel has begun an important phase in its 5G program which will provide improved connectivity for rural communities and important Highway corridors throughout Saskatchewan,” reads a press release.

“Keeping people connected with the latest technologies is critical to everything we do at SaskTel,” said Doug Burnett, SaskTel president and CEO, in the release. “With our 5G network we’re able to deliver an enhanced wireless experience that will ensure our customers can continue to connect to what matters to them, today and well into the future.”

SaskTel’s 5G network is powered by Samsung technology and “can reach speeds of up to 1.2 Gigabits per second (Gbps) allowing customers to connect faster than ever before,” the release says.

“Future benefits of the 5G network once fully deployed will include incredible capacity and ultra-low latency, enabling new use cases for wireless technology that will be the foundation that next-generation innovations will be built upon,” the release adds.

“More than a network upgrade, SaskTel 5G will support more data-driven smart solutions for agriculture and other industries that will help to drive economic development and prosperity across the province.”

To connect to SaskTel’s 5G network, customers need to be within a 5G coverage area, have a 5G-capable device certified for use on the SaskTel 5G network and subscribe to a 5G-compatible wireless plan, the release explains.
