TORONTO — Today, Netflix announced it will open a Canadian office in Toronto.

The news was shared by Netflix officials with Toronto major John Tory and members of city council during a virtual meeting this morning.

Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos had previously announced in February that the streaming giant would open a Canadian office.

In the city of Toronto’s press release today, Sarandos is quoted as saying: “As we grow our business and presence all across Canada, we’re excited that Toronto will be our first local office. We’re looking forward to opening our doors and building on the great work we’ve started with our creative partners to bring more Canadian artists and stories to the world.”

At the time of writing this story, Netflix had not issued its own press release to announce it has selected Toronto for its new Canadian corporate office.

Toronto is already home to one of Netflix’s two Canadian production hubs. (The other is in Vancouver, which was also being considered as the location for Netflix’s Canadian office, according to a Canadian Press report in February.)

Netflix’s productions in Toronto and Toronto area have included Jupiter’s Legacy, The Umbrella Academy and The Queen’s Gambit, according to the city of Toronto’s release.

A backgrounder on Toronto’s film, television and digital media sector says overall production volume in Toronto in 2019 was $2.2 billion and 30,000 people are employed by the city’s production industry.
