TORONTO — Mediapro Canada announced late Tuesday night it is providing host broadcast services for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which tipped off yesterday in Victoria, B.C., where the national teams from Canada, Greece, Turkey, China, Czech Republic and Uruguay are competing for the final spot in the men’s basketball tournament at the Olympic Games in Tokyo next month.
(Canada won its opening game against Greece in the group phase, 97-91.)
The six-day tournament is being held from June 29 to July 4 at Victoria’s Save-On Foods Memorial Centre arena (pictured above).
Mediapro Canada’s 53-foot expand mobile unit Alto is on site in Victoria with a 35-person crew to produce the international signal for domestic and international rights holders, which includes the CBC and streamer DAZN.
Mediapro Canada will produce a total of nine games, using 14 cameras, including an RF Steadicam, an Ultra Slo-Mo Polecam and two Super Slo-Mo cameras to capture all the action.
“We’re looking forward to bringing sports fans around the world live coverage of one of the top international sports events to take place in Canada in 2021,” said Chris Priess, vice-president of broadcast services at Mediapro Canada, in a press release. “We’re also proud of our commitment to contributing to the local production sector, with 50% of our crew sourced from Victoria and Vancouver. Furthermore, five key crew members are women, in line with our drive to promote diversity in our industry.”
Mediapro Canada’s host broadcaster role at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament coincides with the company’s production of both the opening weekend of the Canadian Premier League (CPL), Canada’s first-division men’s professional soccer league which is currently playing matches in a first-round hub in Winnipeg, and the first of eight Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) games that will be aired live over the summer on the CBC.
