WINNIPEG – A new 584 area code will be gradually introduced in Manitoba starting Oct. 29, 2022.
The province is currently served by the 204 and 431 area codes.
The introduction of the new area code is the result of a CRTC decision “and is intended to meet the continuously growing demand for new telephone numbers,” says a press release from the Telecommunications Alliance, which runs communications on behalf of Canada’s major telecom service providers regarding the introduction of new area codes.
“The introduction of a new area code creates millions of additional telephone numbers without affecting the existing numbers,” said Kelly T. Walsh, program manager of the Canadian Numbering Administrator, in the Telecommunications Alliance’s press release. “The new area code 584 will be added to the current area codes already in use in Manitoba.”
The boundaries for local calling areas will not be affected by the addition of the 584 area code, nor will the way long distance calls are dialed. Furthermore, the new area code will not affect special numbers such as 211, 311, 411, 611 and 911, which will still be dialed using three digits.
Earlier this week the Telecommunications Alliance announced Quebec will get three new area codes (263, 354, 468) by the end of the year.
