OTTAWA — Kanata North Business Association (KNBA) today announced, in partnership with Telus and CENGN (Canada’s Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks), the launch of the 5G Innovation Zone in Hub350 as part of the Kanata North Technology Park in Ottawa.
Telus is the anchor 5G partner for the Hub350 technology centre, which is expected to open this summer, and the 5G Innovation Zone will be a hub for conceptualizing, developing, testing and commercializing real-world applications for 5G, says KNBA’s press release.
The Kanata North tech park is home to the largest concentration of technologists, entrepreneurs, start-ups and post-secondary institutions in Canada.
“With the added capabilities of the Telus next-generation 5G network, these innovators will have development opportunities from conceptualization to commercialization and be able to explore monetization and corresponding business models to accelerate adoption of solutions at scale,” reads KNBA’s press release.
“The 5G Innovation Zone through Hub350 will allow some of the country’s greatest innovators to leverage new IoT technologies to improve upon solutions for public safety, autonomous vehicles, medical technologies, manufacturing automation, and positive outcomes for Canadians overall,” said Ibrahim Gedeon, chief technology officer at Telus, in the press release. “Investing in Ottawa, and partnering with the KNBA and Hub350, coincides with our vision to address real customer problems and drive our economy forward through our world-leading technology by developing Canadian solutions and intellectual property for our customers through various 5G pilot programs.”
The 5G Innovation Zone will leverage emerging technology advancements including edge computing, network slicing and IoT commercialization, says the release.
Examples of 5G use cases being applied include:
- Testing the 5G environment for real-world uses including autonomous vehicles, smart cities, medical technologies and many other trials in partnership with global technology leaders and a burgeoning ecosystem.
- Developing and delivering start-of-the-art solutions that enable safer environments for connected workers through AR/VR-enabled technologies.
- Leveraging 5G to drive new environmental, clean tech and smart building applications throughout this 5 km2 zone and dozens of office buildings available in the tech park.
“The 5G Innovation Zone will provide innovators access to the surrounding technology ecosystem of more than 540 companies in the KNBA to identify and prove technology-driven solutions for existing and new opportunities,” explains the release.
