TORONTO — Iristel today announced its new Mobifi portability service, available for $6 per month, which allows Canadian phone numbers to be used with U.S. telecom services when travelling south of the border.

The company says its new phone number portability service is ideal for entrepreneurs and snowbirds who spend extended periods of time in the U.S. and Mexico, and who typically suspend their Canadian wireless service and use U.S. SIM cards in their phones, which means they temporarily lose both their Canadian number and contacts in the phone. Those who choose instead to pay for roaming service while south of the border often pay $8-per-day roaming fees to Canada’s largest wireless providers, says Iristel.

“Our new Mobifi service will forward both voice and data from a person’s Canadian number to their phone with the American SIM card and contacts will remain in the phone,” says Samer Bishay (above), president and CEO of Iristel, in a press release. “It’s seamless, easy to set up and will save Canadians money every month.”

The Mobifi service can be used with any U.S. wireless carrier, including T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon.

“Mobifi is carrier agnostic,” says Bishay. “Customers with Canadian phone numbers, regardless which phone company, can use any U.S. carrier’s SIM cards. Our solution is great for people travelling to the U.S. for extended periods, or any consumer or business that wants to keep Canadian phone numbers but pay lower rates from U.S. phone companies.”

Bishay adds the service works in reverse, too. “As an industry first, Canadians with a U.S. number while back in Canada don’t have to miss out on any of their communications if they wish to have a Canadian number as a primary number,” he says.

The self-service Mobifi app will be available on the Iristel.com website later in June, the company says.
