TORONTO – CTV’s top news executive, Wendy Freeman, announced today she has decided to step down at the end of 2021 after more than 25 years at CTV.
“It is with a great sense of pride and accomplishment that I announce today that I am leaving my position as head of CTV News,” said Freeman in the press release announcing her departure.
“I am extremely grateful for all the wonderful people that crossed my path over the past 25 years, some of which have become great friends over the years. While I am sad to leave such a great team, I am excited for the next chapter of my career.”
The release did not say what that next chapter might be.
“Wendy has been a trailblazer for women in media, a consummate broadcaster who guided CTV News to be the premier source of news for Canadians for over a decade,” said Karine Moses, Bell Media’s senior vice president, content development and news, in the release.
“Her tireless drive to provide Canadians with the top news stories of the day has earned her multiple accolades over the years, but perhaps her most meaningful contribution is the building of the incredibly strong team she leaves behind. As she reflects on her next endeavors, we wish her the very best.”
Freeman led CTV’s news division since 2010, and is responsible for news, information, and current events programming including CTV News, BNN Bloomberg, CP24, as well as the current affairs shows Power Play, Question Period, and W5.
She has received a number of awards throughout her career, and has been honoured with a national lifetime achievement award from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for her service and excellence in broadcast journalism in June, 2021. Earlier in her career, she was awarded the 2015 president’s award from the RTDNA, 2014 Woman of the Year by Women in Communications and Technology (WCT), and as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) in 2012 and 2016.
