OTTAWA — The CRTC has set a deadline of Monday to submit comments on a request by a dozen organizations to extend the deadline for submissions to its three consultations related to the implementation of the Online Streaming Act.

The organizations on Friday filed the request to extend the deadlines, which were set at June 12 and June 27, to July 28. They also asked that reply deadlines be extended from June and July to September.

The regulator is now asking others to comment on the request by May 29 at 5 p.m.

The organizations said the time currently set for submissions is not enough to “consult and to undertake necessary research, thereby weakening the record of these proceedings” and that Cabinet has yet to provide a policy direction to the CRTC that would help guide the submitting parties on reasonable recommendations.

Earlier this month, the regulator launched three proceedings toward setting the framework from the legislation, which requires online broadcasters to contribute to the Canadian system. It is proposing a flexible system for how broadcasters contribute to Canadian content and is asking how it should determine which broadcasters must register with the regulation and what it should do about the existing digital media exemption order.
