TORONTO and MONTREAL – Corus Entertainment confirmed Tuesday that it will launch English- and French-language versions of Disney Channel in Canada on September 1st.
But while Corus Média’s announcement said that the new La chaîne Disney will replace Télétoon Rétro, Corus Entertainment declined to reveal which English-language service would be rebranded or replaced. When contacted by Cartt.ca, a company spokesperson said that information could not be provided at this time, and that details on Disney Channel’s carriage distribution would be announced soon. As Cartt.ca was first to report this week, Corus' Cartoon Network Canada will be replacing the English service Teletoon Retro.
Teen actress and singer Zendaya is scheduled to appear as a guest host for Disney Channel’s September 1st Canadian launch, and a different Disney Channel star will host themed segments each day for the remainder of that week, reads the press release. Disney Channel will also air Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy on September 5 at 9:00 PM ET, day-and-date with Disney XD in the U.S., in advance of the official premiere of the series on September 26. Other programming will include new episodes of series K.C. Undercover, Jessie, Austin & Ally and Girl Meets World.
La chaîne Disney pledged to offer the popular shows that have made Disney Channel famous, including Le Monde de Riley, Agent K.C., Austin et Ally, Liv et Maddie, Princesse Sofia and Star Wars Rebels. A free app will launch later this fall, allowing subscribers to catch their favorite shows and exclusive content on their tablets or phones. That channel will take over Télétoon Rétro’s spot, whose “most popular shows” will be moving to Télétoon’s daytime programming, continued the announcement.
Presented in some 30 languages, Disney Channel airs in over 100 countries internationally.
