BANFF – Fledgling radio association Canadian Association of Radio Broadcasters (CARB) is merging with the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, Cartt.ca has learned.

While the CAB has always represented radio broadcasters, Golden West Broadcasting chair Elmer Hildebrand began working on a radio-only association early last year when it appeared that the CAB would fold.  While CARB was incorporated, it never officially launched as an association.

CAB chair Sylvie Courtemanche told Cartt.ca on Tuesday at the Banff World Media Fest that CARB will officially fall under the CAB umbrella later this year once it has created a separate radio council.

“We’re expanding our radio activities”, Courtemanche said. “What this means is that there will be a specific council with a specific board to deal with radio issues, including those related to the next radio review.”

CAB currently has one board of seven members that represents conventional television, specialty and pay, and radio broadcasters on copyright advocacy; accessibility issues like closed-captioning and described video and administrative functions related to various industry funds. It is also the major funder of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC).
