MONTREAL – Videotron’s Freedom Mobile announced Thursday a $50 “unlimited” mobile wireless plan with unlimited talk and text both in Canada and the United States.

Subscribers will have 40 GB of the LTE network’s fastest speeds on the plan to use anywhere in Canada and the United States. If they go beyond that, speeds will be slowed down.

While other Canadian carriers offer similar cross-border packages with more high-speed data, Freedom appears to be seeking to capture the market at the lower $50 price point. (The $50 includes a $5 digital discount.)

The announcement comes after Videotron closed its acquisition of Shaw’s Freedom, after agreeing to several legally binding stipulations imposed by the federal minister of innovation, including expanding its 5G network and reducing mobile service prices.

Earlier this month, Videotron had previously announced a price freeze on the monthly rates of Freedom plans and added a 10 per cent data bonus on existing recurring plans.

The offer comes after the CRTC said it was studying increases in international roaming rates by some carriers.

When it was still a Shaw subsidiary, Freedom introduced several unique (to Canada) offerings in the market that forced its competitors to follow suit. That includes eliminating overage fees and instituting speed throttling over the data allotment and increasing monthly data allotments.
