REGINA – SaskTel announced Monday that it will invest roughly $413 million in the province in its fiscal 2023/2024 year, beginning April 1, and more than $1.6 billion over the next five years.

The crown corporation said it will invest more in wireless and fibre broadband infrastructure “than it ever has in a single fiscal year,” which will allow it to expand its 5G wireless network and infinet service, a press release said.

The company will invest $160 million in its wireless deployment plan, which includes constructing 10 new cell sites to enhance wireless coverage and upgrading more than 260 cell sites to 5G. The upgraded sites will provide 5G service in the province’s nine major urban centres, along major highways, and in rural and resort areas, the release noted.

The plan also includes a $106-million direct fibre program offering gigabit download speeds to homes and businesses in 27 communities across the province.

The telco will also invest $70.5 million to “modernize” its core networks, upgrade its select Wi-Fi technology and enhance maxTV infrastructure.
