COLD LAKE, Alta. — The governments of Canada and Alberta announced late Monday more than $2.9 million in funding for two broadband and wireless projects in Indigenous communities in Alberta.

The projects are being funded through the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream of the federal government’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, which was launched in 2016.

A project to upgrade the Internet and cellular infrastructure for the Saddle Lake Cree Nation will receive more than $2.6 million in federal funding.

Another project for Cold Lake First Nations’ reserves will receive $241,544 in federal funding. This project will see the installation of LTE equipment on both existing and new towers.

The funding is conditional on federal requirements regarding Indigenous consultations and environmental and/or impact assessments being met, says the press release from Infrastructure Canada.

No Internet service providers were named in the press release as being responsible for doing the work on the projects.
