LONDON, U.K. — Global low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications company OneWeb announced Sunday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with BT (British Telecom) to explore the provision of connectivity solutions to rural and remote locations of the United Kingdom.
The work with BT “will focus on how satellite technology might support improved capacity, mobile resilience, backhaul and coverage, including Fixed Wireless Access, in challenging geographic locations, as BT explores new options to enhance rural connectivity,” reads OneWeb’s press release.
“As part of the discussions, the companies will consider opportunities to deliver OneWeb’s connectivity services from low Earth orbit to businesses and communities around the UK, as well as identifying collaboration opportunities to develop new services beyond UK’s shores for BT’s global customers,” adds the release.
OneWeb has recently announced distribution partner signings across multiple industries and territories above the 50th parallel with communication companies including the AST Group, Pacific Dataport and Alaska Communications, among others. OneWeb plans to offer LEO satellite connectivity across the United Kingdom, Canada, Alaska, Northern Europe, Greenland, Iceland and the Arctic Sea. The company says it will launch commercial services in the Arctic region in late 2021, and plans to roll out global services in 2022.
