CANADA’S ISPs ALWAYS want to perform well in PCMag’s analysis of the fastest speeds delivered to their customers.
The magazine regularly, with the help of Ookla and actual customers using its Speedtest, takes a look at the internet service providers across Canada to show who offers the fastest Internet service.
The upload and download speeds are given weighted scores and analyzed by PCMag according to a speed index (PCMag Speed Index or PSI). This year’s big winner was Beanfield Metroconnect, which notched huge performance gaps over its competition in Toronto.
When it comes to national providers however, Telus was the fastest.
“Last year, Vancouver-based Telus stepped up to grab the crown. For years, the top dog has been Rogers, the cable provider in many big cities, but Rogers was overtaken by Bell Canada and its Bell Aliant affiliate after they embraced fibre-to-the-home,” reads the PCMag release.
The top three this year is comprised of:
- Beanfield Metroconnect – 417.4 PSI
- Telus – 260.0 PSI
- Bell Canada – 201.0 PSI
Regionally, Albertans are getting the fastest internet and the regions’ ISPs ranked:
- Alberta: Telus – 296.2 PSI
- British Columbia: Telus – 293.7 PSI
- Manitoba: Shaw – 182.6 PSI
- New Brunswick: Bell Canada – 181.2 PSI
- Nova Scotia: Bell Canada – 148.9 PSI
- Ontario (excluding Toronto): Communicate Freely (available in Port Perry, Scugog Island or Blackstock) -188.6 PSI
- Québec: Bell Canada – 210.2 PSI
- Saskatchewan: Shaw – 278.9 PSI
There were not enough testers in other regions, so they are not ranked.
Top Canadian cities with the fastest internet:
- John’s, Newfoundland – PSI 576.3 (The NL capital did not make the top 10 last year and the report’s author told Cartt.ca the reason for the jump was from Bell Canada users whose “numbers alone are phenomenal. If we’d only looked at Bell Canada users (210 of them), the PCMag Speed Index would be 640.9.”)
- Sarnia, Ontario – PSI 480.8 (did not make the top 10 last year)
- Lévis, Québec – PSI 480.8 (in the top 10 for the third year in a row)
- Pembina, Alberta – PSI 370.6
- Nanaimo, British Columbia – PSI 366.1
- Knutsford, British Columbia – PSI 362.1
- Airdrie, Alberta – PSI 343.3
- White Rock, British Columbia – PSI 342.2
- Lancaster Park, Alberta – PSI 335.9
- Beaumont, Alberta – PSI 323.1
