TORONTO — The Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) today announced Sean Porter (above) has been promoted to the position of lead negotiator and senior director of national industrial relations and counsel.

In his new role, Porter will oversee national industrial relations for the CMPA and lead upcoming negotiations in what the organization expects to be a busy bargaining year, says the press release announcing his appointment.

Porter’s promotion follows the announcement that Warren Ross, currently CMPA’s general counsel and vice-president of national industrial relations, will be leaving the organization in May to pursue a new opportunity.

Prior to joining the CMPA in 2018, Porter was an associate in the labour and employment group at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, where he advised and represented employers on a broad range of labour, employment and human rights matters, and he previously worked as an associate at Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP, a labour and employment law firm.

“Since joining the CMPA, Sean has been a great asset to the organization,” said CMPA president and CEO Reynolds Mastin, in the press release. “His ability to see the big strategic picture and collaborative approach to addressing complex industrial relations issues will serve our members extremely well. I would also like to thank Warren Ross for his tireless dedication and outstanding contributions to the CMPA over the past decade.”

The CMPA says it will be hiring for a new role in its national industrial relations department and a job description will be posted on the organization’s website in the coming weeks.
