TORONTO — CBC and Radio-Canada Distribution, the public broadcaster’s international content licensing arm, announced today several European production companies have acquired the format rights to the CBC original series Fridge Wars.

The unscripted series’ format sees world-renowned chefs competing against each other “to create top-notch meals that have to please the discerning taste buds of the average family, using only the ingredients found in their fridges,” reads the CBC distributor’s press release.

Fridge Wars is co-produced and co-created by CBC and The Gurin Company Inc. Hosted by Canadian comedian and actress Emma Hunter, the series first premiered on CBC in winter 2020. A few months later, the CW Network picked up the original series to air in the U.S.

Since then, production companies Aito Media in Finland, WeMake in France and Rochstar in Poland have all acquired the format rights for the series, along with Endemol Shine picking up the option for Germany, says the press release.

Currently, the series is being represented outside of North America by Magnify Media in the U.K.

“It will be exciting to see how the show continues to be adapted with different celebrity chefs and hosts at the helm,” said Gwen Jones McCauley, director of global distribution at CBC, in the release.
