HURON COUNTY, Ont. — In its latest funding announcement, Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) announced today more than $15 million in contracts have been awarded to support 10 fibre-to-the-home projects that will expand high-speed broadband access to 1,854 households and businesses in Huron County, Ont.
These newly announced projects are receiving $7.3 million in funding through SWIFT, in partnership with the governments of Ontario and Canada, and which also includes a $2.8-million contribution from Huron County. The Internet service providers who have been awarded the contracts are contributing more than $7.7 million to the projects.
Collectively, these fibre builds will service 335 kilometres of underserved roadway within the municipalities of Central Huron, Huron East, South Huron and Morris-Turnberry and within the townships of North Huron and Howick.
The details of the 10 FTTH projects are as follows:
- Tuckersmith Communications has been awarded funding for five FTTH projects, which will collectively service 131 kms of underserved roads to bring high-speed Internet to 465 homes and businesses in Central Huron, Huron East and Morris-Turnberry. The five projects represent a total investment of $3.9 million and will be completed by early 2023, with some project areas expected to be up and running with service starting in early 2022.
- HuronTel has been awarded funding to support three FTTH projects, which will service a total of 110 kms of roads to bring high-speed broadband access to 487 households and businesses in Central Huron, Morris-Turnberry and throughout the township of North Huron. Representing a total investment of $4.8 million, these three projects are expected to be completed with service available by mid-2023.
- Wightman Telecom was awarded a contract to deploy fibre-optic cabling along 24 kms of rural roadway within the township of Howick to bring high-speed Internet access to 668 homes and businesses. Construction of the $3.7-million FTTH solution is expected to be completed with service available by early 2022.
- Hay Communications was awarded a contract to deploy fibre cable along more than 70 kms of roads within the municipality of South Huron to deliver high-speed broadband access to 234 homes and businesses. The $2.7-million FTTH network is expected to be completed with service available by early 2022.
These projects are part of SWIFT’s $209-million broadband expansion plan to bring improved broadband access to approximately 50,000 rural homes and businesses across southwestern Ontario.
