TORONTO — According to a press release issued Monday by Apple, the company’s iOS app economy has helped to drive economic growth and opportunity for Canadian app developers during the pandemic, with Apple’s App Store now supporting more than 243,000 jobs in Canada, an increase of more than 18% over the past year, the company says.
Since the App Store was launched in 2008, app developers across Canada have generated more than $2 billion in total earnings, growing 20% in 2020 compared to the previous year, Apple says in its press release. Apple says 90% of Canadian app developer revenues came from outside the country.
The company says some of the App Store programs which have helped Canadian developers to prosper despite the pandemic include the Apple Developer Program, Entrepreneur Camp and App Store Small Business Program, which launched in January and offers a reduced commission of 15% on sales of digital goods and services for companies who earn less than $1 million in proceeds over the course of the year.
