TORONTO and DENVER — Last week, Telstra Americas announced its first point of presence (PoP) in Canada, located at Cologix’s TOR1 interconnection hub in Toronto, is now available to allow Canadian businesses to leverage Telstra’s subsea network to access markets throughout Asia.
Telstra first announced last October it was expanding its network into Canada. The Australian-based company owns and operates the largest subsea cable system in the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 250,000 miles (or 400,000 kilometres) of subsea cables globally, and carries almost one-third of all Asia-Pac Internet traffic, says the company.
Through the two companies’ partnership, Telstra and Cologix customers now have access to low-latency connectivity between Canada and the Asia-Pacific region. Based in Denver, Cologix describes itself as “a network and cloud neutral interconnection, ecosystem and hyperscale edge data center company” in its press release. (Cologix is majority owned by U.S. private equity firm Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners, which also owns Canada’s Xplornet.)
“Located at 151 Front Street, Canada’s largest and most important carrier hotel, Cologix’s TOR1 interconnection hub is a prime location for Telstra to enter the Canadian market. With our scalable, secure and reliable infrastructure across Canada, Telstra can quickly grow its business and reach new customers,” said Sean Maskell, Cologix Canada’s president, in the release.
“Telstra has provided international connectivity into all of the major economies in APAC for U.S.-headquartered businesses for more than two decades, and our move into Canada with the Toronto PoP will now enable Canadian businesses to leverage our world class infrastructure and subsea network to quickly access new growth markets throughout Asia,” added Nicholas Collins, president of Telstra Americas. “Cologix’s access to major cloud providers and ecosystem of customers, partners and services makes them a natural partner to help us offer network connectivity across North America through our network node at Cologix’s TOR1 interconnection hub.”
