WOODSTOCK, NB — Rural-focused broadband provider Xplornet Communications today announced it is acquiring Ocdotus Inc., a fibre-based service provider in southern Ontario which operates under the name Metro Loop.
Headquartered in Hamilton, Ont., Metro Loop provides fibre-to-the-premise services via its fibre network in Hamilton and Haldimand County. Through the acquisition agreement, Xplornet is acquiring all of Metro Loop’s customers and operations. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed in Xplornet’s press release.
This acquisition follows recent announcements about Xplornet’s fibre expansion in Grey County and Bruce County in southwestern Ontario. In addition, Xplornet has ongoing fibre projects across eastern Ontario.
“With this acquisition, Xplornet is putting a strong focus on deploying fibre in rural Ontario,” said Bill Macdonald, executive vice-president of business development at Xplornet, in the company’s press release. “We are eager to combine Metro Loop’s energy and entrepreneurial spirit with Xplornet’s drive to accelerate fibre deployments across Canada.”
Metro Loop’s employee team, including its president, Jake Vandendool, will be joining Xplornet and “will be integral to the growth of this business”, says Xplornet’s press release.
“We’re proud of what we’ve built at Metro Loop,” said Vandendool. “Xplornet will continue to build on our legacy and push the buildout of cutting-edge fibre networks further and faster into rural Ontario.”
Xplornet says the Metro Loop acquisition builds on its investments in fibre and 5G-ready wireless networks across Canada. Last year, Xplornet announced an investment of more than $500 million in its national broadband network to deliver 5G services to rural Canadians.
