Leftover data, that is

WINNIPEG – In advance of November, 14th, the official day it will begin accepting new customers, Xplore Mobile unveiled today the Rollover, its new wireless plan which will allow customers to roll over their last month's unused data.

"Manitobans have been asking for a wireless company that treats them fairly and offers plans that are simple, affordable and transparent. We want to be that company," said Allison Lenehan, president of Xplore Mobile in the press release.

Xplore Mobile recently launched its service by welcoming approximately 20,000 mobile customers transferred from Bell Mobility (all of whom had recently been MTS customers). In February of 2017 the Competition Bureau told Bell that if it wanted to purchase the now-former MTS, it must spin off some wireless customers, spectrum and stores. Xplornet got that, plus a roaming agreement and access to some wireless infrastructure while Telus also received some customers and retail outlets. While Xplornet has long been a satellite and fixed wireless broadband provider, this is its first foray into mobile wireless.

The chosen group of customers will be transitioned in phases onto “a new, state-of-the-art, industry leading mobile network,” adds the release “As part of the phased migration, these 20,000 customers will be the first in the province to have the opportunity to choose to roll over one month's unused data allowance to the next month, with no strings attached.”

There is likely a fair bit of uncertainty among these customers who are now changing mobile providers to a brand new outfit through no action of their own.

This is why, said Xplornet, the transition has been “deliberately designed to optimize the experience for each customer.” Three Xplore Mobile retail locations in Winnipeg and Brandon are now open, with three more opening this week.

“Customers who have received a welcome letter from Xplore Mobile can expect their account and service to transition, based on their schedule,” adds the release. “Xplore Mobile will have a focus on transition with appointments and extra staffing between November 2018 and March 2019.”
