OTTAWA — The federal government announced today $4.46 million in funding from its Universal Broadband Fund’s rapid response stream has been awarded to bring high-speed Internet to rural residents of Pictou County (pop. 44,000) in Nova Scotia.
The funding is designated for phase one of Pictou County’s high-speed Internet project, which is expected to connect many underserved households, and the municipality is also contributing $3.32 million to the project. The $25-million municipal broadband project was announced in 2019.
The number of households to be connected and any ISP partners involved in the project were not announced. The government’s press release said the project may also create the opportunity for improved cellular coverage in the area.
The federal government’s $1.75-billion Universal Broadband Fund was launched in November 2020.
